About Me

Specialising in Stress, Addictions, Phobias & Weight Control
I am a qualified Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner.
I became a Master Practitioner of NLP in 2009, also completing the Master Hypnotist Certification Training (ANLP accredited.)

For most of my professional life I have worked as a solicitor, specialising in courtroom advocacy, and ran my own Legal Aid practice for 12 years. I taught the art of advocacy to trainee lawyers on professional training courses for ten years, using NLP techniques. Before entering the law I worked as a professional actor and musician. This background makes me particularly well-qualified to assist with work- and presentation-related issues. I am particularly interested in helping people with work-related stress and anxiety and in assisting people in preparing for interview or public speaking situations. I also have an interest in helping people cope with sleep issues, phobias and addictions, especially those related to smoking and food.

As a courtroom lawyer I have used extensive communication skills, for example, the use of humour, empathy and rapport which a good advocate needs in dealing successfully with a judge and jury.  I use these as relaxation techniques and as part of a healing process.  Again, as a courtroom advocate I know how to use my voice dynamics as part of good communication skills.  Many of my clients have said that my speaking voice and manner are comforting.  My belief which I seek to embed in the clients subconscious, when in trance, is that no one need be a victim of addiction, stress, lack of self esteem or confidence.  My favourite technique as a form of induction is to describe the client being in a place or setting in which they feel comfortable and happy, for example, a beach, a mountain in which they can feel safe.  As an advocate having certain literary skills I am adept at painting a vivid picture in which the client can see themself.

How hypnotherapy can help you

Your first session is free and is used to get to know you and to explain something of the history of hypnosis and some common misconceptions. I will explain that there is no magic or stagecraft involved. You will always have control of the situation and can leave at any point you choose. I emphasise that I can give no guarantee of success but I can assure you that at the end of the session or treatment period you will feel better and more hopeful. Central to all of this is an explanation of how the subconscious affects conscious thoughts and decisions. Hypnosis makes it possible to use suggestions and imagery which can get rid of unwanted thoughts and unwanted mental processes to promote healing.

As a qualified Master NLP Practitioner of some years standing I combine the techniques of Neuro-Linguistic Programming with techniques of hypnotherapy. I specialise, for example, in teaching a technique which can help you harness your past experiences of confidence, power and happiness and recreate them to address your current problems. I believe that everyone has resources of which they may be unaware and so I will try to enable you to tap in to your personal gifts, achievements and qualities to help overcome the issues which are causing you concern.

By the end of the free introductory session I would expect to have a clear idea of what you want and need so that we can work together. I would encourage you to express your feelings honestly about hypnotherapy and whether you think that it could help you. It is only at this point that I would ask you to commit to a programme of treatment.

Testimonials

What my clients say

Sue

"Over the years my fear of flying has recurred, usually after a flight involving turbulence. I realised I was afraid of going on holiday and sought Alan's help. After just one session I felt much more confident and, to my astonishment, didn't just tolerate but thoroughly enjoyed my holiday flights – definitely a first!"

Fiona

"Alan has helped me overcome anxiety and a fear of flying and l cannot thank him enough.
He gave me coping mechanisms to use in-between sessions, which really helped me when l needed it most. I felt like he really took the time to understand my problems so he could tailor sessions for me to make them as effective as possible.
His lovely personality and fantastic sense of humour made me feel relaxed and l really enjoyed my sessions. And his voice! Alan has a wonderful voice which really helped me to relax into the sessions. Overall, a thoroughly pleasant way to overcome my issues. Thank you, Alan!"

Catherine

"I was suffering severe back pain for which I was seeing an osteopath. That treatment was ultimately effective but there were several weeks when I found it difficult to walk and sitting was excruciating. I had several sessions with Alan which were an enormous help. After each session the pain felt far more manageable and I was able to sleep and feel generally much calmer."

Emily

"For many years I have suffered flashbacks and distressing emotions around the anniversary of my parents' deaths. It was a period of time that I had come to dread. It sometimes struck me that it felt like the way people describe PTSD. Through hypnosis I was helped to see what had happened in an entirely new way. I was amazed as the anniversary came round that there were no flashbacks at all and I was able to think of them happily and without distress. This has made a huge difference to me. I was very impressed with Alan's skill in dealing with such a sensitive subject and making a real difference."

Diane

"I suffered for years from Globophobia (fear of Balloons) and it was making my life very difficult. I worked in a customer facing job so it caused issues at work and I was afraid to go to public events such as Christmas nights out in case the room was decorated with balloons. I had three sessions with Alan and now have no qualms about accepting invitations. When I see a balloon now instead of having a panic attack I look on in disbelief that such an innocuous item was effectively ruling my life. I can safely say that my time with Alan has completely changed my life for the better."
